If you\u2019re hitting the desert in an electric vehicle (or just need a stylish spot to cool off), Rivian <\/a>recently unveiled a Charging Outpost<\/a> just outside Joshua Tree National Park, and it\u2019s hands-down the coolest EV station we\u2019ve ever seen. Designed with the spirit of road-tripping adventurers in mind, the space combines high design with human-centered amenities that make the wait feel like part of the journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n[jwplayer OiMDUlPq]\n\n\n\n

There are six fast-charging DC ports (up to 400kW), a shaded wooden deck, hammocks, a children\u2019s climbing wall, restrooms, Wi-Fi, and a curated selection of snacks, drinks, and outdoor essentials. Inside the breezy, desert-modern lounge, you\u2019ll find coffee table books and comfy seating for a moment of rest or inspiration. The structure itself evokes midcentury gas stations and desert dwellings alike, with natural materials and a low-slung profile that blends into the Mojave landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, it powers up the R1T <\/a>and R1S<\/a>, but it also welcomes any CCS-compatible EV (including Teslas with adapters). And if you're not charging? It's still worth the stop. The outpost is located just under a mile from the national park\u2019s west entrance, making it an ideal jumping-off point for your next hike, climb, or starry-night campout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We caught up with Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe\u2014an avid camper and father of three\u2014about what inspired the outpost\u2019s design, how nature influenced the brand\u2019s mission, and why Joshua Tree never gets old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe objective is to create an elevated charging experience that is in part a destination but also in part helps just elevate the idea of an electric vehicle. It makes charging about appreciating the moment. It\u2019s a chance to collect yourself before you go do something else. We're going to have future outposts that are the gateway to something wonderful and outdoors. Many of those things in the United States are national parks<\/a>, but that's not always the case. The one we put in Northern California looks like it should be an old gas station. It has that romantic feel of an old gas station. In Joshua Tree it's obviously leaning into the desert feel of it all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn Southern California, Joshua Tree is just the right distance for either a day trip or a two-day trip. It engages your imagination, and you feel like you're in Dr. Seuss in real life, so it\u2019s a great place to go with kids. I have three kids, and they love Joshua Tree. We've car-camped in an R1S; we've camped in an R1T with a tent as well. We\u2019ve stayed at AutoCamp<\/a> a couple times, which is really cool. And then we've done it as a day trip, like, early morning, late-night kind of thing. I've done it once in summer, but the other three seasons are much easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere was a moment where it became really clear that the brand had to go the direction it\u2019s ultimately gone. It was in the San Bernadino Mountains. This was years and years ago, and it was myself and a few people on the team. It was one of those situations where we're like: Why don't we get to do this more in life? This is rejuvenating and recharging. And our brand needs to really lean into helping inspire people. Even if you do a few trips like this a year, it can change your whole perspective on a lot of things. And that was an \u201cah-ha moment\u201d for us, which is: You don't have to totally shift away from family life to appreciate living in the outdoors and being outdoors. You can have bite-sized, weekend-sized, half-week-sized trips that fuel you through lots of days of not having that. And so that was a big ah-ha for us. But that was before Rivian was even called Rivian. I think about the trip a lot because it was in the midst of thinking about a lot of the brand position in the company. It's one of those things where it happens and you don't ever take pictures or archive or any of this stuff. It's just like, it happens. As it tends to be with wine country, there's no shortage of great food in this little town. A classic staple on the circuit is Les Petites Canailles<\/a>, where you'll find Chef Julien Asseo\u2014who has worked for the likes of Guy Savoy and Jo\u00ebl Robuchon\u2014cooking takes on classic French bistro fare. At Hatch<\/a>, you'll definitely want to opt in for their iconic rotisserie chicken. Pull up to Jeffry's Wine Country BBQ<\/a> for some brisket or pulled pork, then bring your tray next door to Indigen\u00e9 Cellars<\/a><\/strong> where they'll pour splashes of their award-winning wines to pair with them. As far as breakfast goes, it's tough to beat Twisted & Glazed,<\/a> where they make their donuts fresh every morning (and have a killer breakfast burrito to boot). If you're a fan of kitschy Polynesian cocktails, you'll want to stop into Cane Tiki Room<\/a>. And be sure to check out newcomers to the scene Parchetto<\/a> and S'Aranella,<\/a> also located in the center of town, making sure to stop into Brown Butter Cookie Company<\/a> for gifts to take home (or to nosh on your drive back).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to Taste <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The defiant surfy vibes of Tank Garage<\/a> are an embodiment of the next generation of California winemakers, and their Paso Robles filling station is a great place to get a taste of their one-off experimental offerings. Think limited edition drops of Cab Sauv made via \"cosmic fermentation<\/a>\" or steely Riesling<\/a> inspired by a Jamaican dance hall. Similarly modern is Booker<\/a>, whose wines are reflected in their stunning California-style open floor plan<\/a> tasting room that opens up to the\u00a0Paso<\/a>\u00a0vineyards. For a one-stop-shop, go walkabout at Tin City<\/a> and explore works by local by artisans, distillers, and brewers. Or for a more traditional experience, visit the estate at Daou<\/a> or Austin Hope<\/a> for stellar Cabs. Epoch<\/a> is another great option that'll help you get a sense of the style in the area, as is L\u2019Aventure<\/a>. If you want to get a broad scope of what Paso is all about without going too far, do a tasting at Serial Wines<\/a>, a super stylish tasting room located right in the center of Downtown that also offers tapas and bites to keep you sated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to Stay <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re huge fans<\/a> of Nomada Hotel Group<\/a>\u2018s properties, and the two new Paso Robles haunts from owner Kimberly Walker are no exception. The River Lodge Motel<\/a>, located just off Highway 101, and the Farmhouse Motel<\/a> in downtown Paso were both renovated by Walker, each drawing in ultra-hip young travelers with their distinct designs and well-curated spaces. Guests at both properties have access to the River Lodge's pool, which is the ideal spot to kick back with a spritz after a day of tasting. The Piccolo<\/a> is another fantastic option, offering the only rooftop bar in downtown Paso and a Moet champagne vending machine in the lobby, all within stumbling distance of several wineries, restaurants, distilleries, and shopping of downtown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
