This outdoor shower has no shortage of style, but Clasen also designed it with practicality in mind. “We built a small fence showing the exposed open planks to house soaps and brushes to brush off the sand after surfing,” she shares.

<g fill="none" fill-rule="evenodd"></g>

4 of 8Riley Starr Photography

An Open-Concept Oasis

Outdoor showers are typically concealed behind a partition wall for the ultimate privacy, but why hide great design? Not only can carefully selected shades set the tone for your backyard, but they can also make the area a lot easier to decorate. For example, if you’re working with coastal blues and whites, there’s no need to entertain the idea of a highlighter-yellow umbrella.

So, which colors are the best to take al fresco? Well, it depends on your personal style. For Jessica Pell of Manola Studio, who designed Hotel Wren near Joshua Tree, it’s important to select shades that mirror your surroundings. “Nature is always a big influence in my work and the desert really led the way for this project,” Pell explains. “At Hotel Wren, we chose exterior colors that echo the tones of the desert so the building could feel like part of the land, not placed on top of it.”

However, over at Parker Palm Springs, it’s all about cheery, can’t-miss colors. “Embrace contrast using different colors and textures,” recommends Brandon McCurley, the Palm Springs property’s managing director. “Be bold. Think about wild bougainvillea spilling over hedges and greenery against brightly-colored furniture.”

Translation? You may also want to create more synergy between your hardscaping and landscaping with natural materials like stone and wood. “I use similar materials, tones and visual language to let the rooms expand outward both visually and physically,” Pell says. “It creates a sense of continuity where you feel connected to the landscape while still feeling anchored to the architecture.”

The pool at Hotel Wren.

Ethan Jones

Invest in High-Quality Materials

While we’re on that topic: Unless you want to buy brand-new outdoor furniture every few years, it’s a good idea to invest in high-quality materials. “I recommend low-maintenance finishes for your furniture that are durable in the sun and rain,” says Sandra F. With Victory Garden LA planter boxes overflowing with produce, a chic treehouse tucked into the landscape, and a philosophy rooted in play and purpose, her garden captures the spirit of how young West Coasters want to live now. This story spotlights Flanders’ edible planting strategy, her approach to outdoor entertaining with kids in mind, and how the ethos of her brand—equal parts fashion, function, and fun—translates to her home garden.

Jillian Palucis

Where Play Meets Purpose

Emma’s vision for her outdoor space wasn’t a strict blueprint—it was a feeling. She wanted a secret garden tucked into the city, a little pocket of wild magic where kids could explore freely and adults could finally exhale. The design evolved naturally, blending play, purpose, and beauty. One of the earliest additions was a treehouse, thoughtfully designed by Pasadena dad Bryce Ryness to look like it had always belonged—nestled like a fairytale among the trees. The mini-farm came later, with some trial and error (hello, critter covers!) before it truly took shape.

Beauty and function go hand in hand for Emma. Instead of a utilitarian vegetable patch, she integrated edible plants like herbs, strawberries, citrus trees, artichokes, and greens seamlessly into the landscape alongside flowers and native plants. Garden beds are placed to complement lounge areas, creating a space that’s both cohesive and inviting. Her favorite moments? Watching kids pick lemons and mint for lemonade or grab snap peas before dinner—turning the garden into a hands-on classroom where food growing sparks curiosity and wonder.

Jillian Palucis

Finding Balance: Kid Zones and Adult Hangouts

Creating flow is key to balancing playful kid zones with relaxing adult spaces. Emma tucked the treehouse and fire pit deeper into the yard for adventurous kids, while positioning the dining table near the kitchen for easy access. The pool and outdoor dining areas are designed for casual conversation, with plenty of seating and shade so grown-ups can unwind while still keeping an ear out for the kids’ laughter. The result is a seamless mix of lively play and calm relaxation.

Jillian Palucis

Emma highlights a recent egg hunt as a perfect example of the garden’s easy rhythm. Friends dropped in throughout the day, cooking together and sharing meals, while the children roamed freely. It was a joyful, village-like vibe—exactly the kind of community feel she strives to create.

Her edible garden plays a starring role in outdoor entertaining. Instead of last-minute store runs, fresh herbs, citrus, and veggies are plucked straight from the garden, adding a natural, seasonal touch to meals. Simple dishes like tomato basil salad and garden sangria keep things fresh and effortless. Emma’s top hosting tip? Keep it casual. Kids just want space and simple activities, and the more relaxed the host, the better the day flows for everyone.

Jillian Palucis

A Backyard That Teaches and Inspires

Emma’s work with HAWKs LA—a program dedicated to connecting kids with nature through hands-on experiences—deeply influences her backyard design. Lessons from HAWKs, like “Leave No Trace” and slowing down to observe small wonders, shape her approach, allowing parts of the yard to remain wild and scrappy.

Balancing adventure with relaxation means layering the garden into zones that serve both energy and ease. Kids have spaces to run and climb, while adults can unwind by the pool or hammock. As the kids grow, so will the backyard—the clubhouse may shift into an art or music studio, the treehouse might swap its swing for a hammock chair, and the muddy play areas may give way to more fire pit gatherings. Yet, the pockets of wildness will always remain, honoring the garden’s lessons in rhythm, resilience, and seasonal change. Beyond just a family retreat, she envisions the space becoming more of a community hub, a place to gather, celebrate, and share the deep connection to nature that’s central to her work with HAWKs.

The future holds plenty of exciting possibilities. Emma dreams of adding a tiny greenhouse for starting seedlings and drying herbs, and she’s even intrigued by playful ideas like a tin-can telephone with neighbors. A cedar hot tub and more kinetic wind sculptures by Lyman Whitaker are also on her wish list—each addition unfolding naturally, reflecting the garden’s ongoing story. Here, the thought is that no space is ever truly finished; it’s about staying open to growth, change, and the joyful surprises that come with it.

This L.A. Story

The house in question has been called Hidden House and Hidden Canyon by its architect and landscaper, respectively, and when you arrive, you understand why. After climbing the vertiginous switchbacks of the highest points in L.A.’s Mount Washington neighborhood, you need to navigate a narrow private road that goes from paved to dirt and is only wide enough for one car to pass; then you wind down another narrow road that hugs the curve of a steep hill, past a grove of trees and a fenced-in garden growing a wild tangle of flowers and vegetables. It’s like passing through sequential airlocks that progressively lead from the urban to the agrarian. At the end of these roads is the house, all muted stucco and redwood patinated by time. It’s low-key, receding into the hill. But the more you pay attention, it becomes clear that it’s high concept: That garden provides bouquets and vegetables for LA Homefarm, the Atwater food and housewares shop run by farm box pioneer Lauri Kranz. This home was an early commission of Standard Architecture, the firm responsible for the serenely minimalist, whitewashed, blonde-wood James Perse shops and Jenni Kayne stores. (As well as the residences of the brands’ owners.) The homeowner, Laura Gabbert, is a tastemaker Angeleno in her own right, having directed City of Gold, the acclaimed documentary on the late food critic Jonathan Gold. And the garden is by Fi Campbell, the former set decorator turned landscape designer and an old friend of Gabbert.

And so began what’s turned into a decade-plus collaboration that shows how the best landscape designs are iterative, requiring a consciousness, attentiveness, and sensitivity to the site, the lives of the people living with the garden, and the requirements of nature. Much like the home itself, the garden needed to be adaptable. So, Campbell planted fast-growing sycamores to shade the dining area. She extended the hardscape of the front patio with local flagstone and boulders that take you through a yard of agaves tucked next to boulders, which each create a microclimate and focal point to hold the space while the plant grows and provide shade when it needs it. The yard needed to be sturdy enough to thrive when its owner was on the road for work. She selected a palate of native plants: billowing bunch grasses, thickets of various sages.

Zen Zones

Keep outdoor spaces organized with intentional details that won’t sacrifice relaxation requests. When it comes to using plants to create privacy, landscape designer Alexis Woods placed shrubs and trees in clusters to create screened-in areas for conversation, while not blocking views of the surrounding landscape. She recommends selecting shrubs that grow no more than 3-4 feet tall so dining tables and chairs can be used within the space and guests can enjoy the surrounding garden while seated.

By leaning into plants hyper-local to your specific outdoor space, you can create an extension of the surrounding ecology, inviting in wildlife that will ultimately provide biological balance and enhance your outdoor experience. The Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects team encourages you to think about your garden as a home for a plant community, not as a collection of plants. By knowing your growing conditions and identifying a plant community that will thrive within your microclimate, you will set yourself up for success. The team suggests starting with a mix of “workhorses,” such as native grasses, hardy perennials, and shrubs that will provide year-round structure in your garden before layering in flowering perennials, annuals, and bulbs, which provide color. Alexis Woods notes that mixing ornamental grasses, such as Muhlenbergia, with soft tall plants like Salvia ‘Winnifred Gilman’, and lower plants like Teucrium chamaedrys and Erigeron glaucus gives a soft, prairie-like effect similar to the meadow plantings at Flowers Vineyards.

Structural Style

Ethan Gordon/Courtesy of Flowers Vineyards & Winery

Embracing existing or creating new elevation changes within the landscape is key when creating outdoor rooms. When the team at Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects began work on the project, there were a series of moss-covered rammed-earth retaining walls they decided to preserve, knowing it would be impossible to match their aged patina. Sense of place is a theme implemented throughout the property. The use of hardscaping needed to feel appropriate to the agricultural heritage of the region, so the team adhered to a relatively simple palette of crushed stone, wood, blackened steel, and concrete.

Structure does not always come in the form of retaining walls. The design teams created different pathways for visitors to explore and wander that range from concrete to stable ground to gravel, depending on the foot traffic. The team at Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects explains that while the expansive paving footprint of the upper terrace is exceptional for larger gatherings and events, they sought to soften the space by mixing concrete and crushed stone and pairing it with the grasses that move and sway in the breeze to soften the overall space.

For gardens with a smaller footprint, container plantings with carefully selected botanical accents can also be used throughout the space to create rooms. The Nelson Byrd Woltz team encourages you to think of planters as a mix between a flower vase and a garden and use them to experiment with different shapes, colors, and textures. While they recommend native species for garden plantings, containers are an opportunity to introduce more exotic plants into the mix. Even small table planters can elevate an outdoor space. Alexis Woods notes that succulents and ornamental grasses were used throughout the tasting areas to provide small pops of different textures and colors, which add life to the space without overwhelming it.

Spotlight on Simplicity

Ryan Neeven/Courtesy of Flowers Vineyards & Winery

In addition to the natural sensory delights of sight and smell through the use of choice layered native plantings, sound also plays a vital role in this garden with flowing water throughout the tasting areas. For this project, the water features were all existing on site and made of the same rammed earth as the retaining walls. In addition to their rippling auditory components, they also trace and accentuate the elevation drops between garden terraces. You can easily replicate this soothing sound at home with an understated rock bubbler fountain, carefully tucked in a quiet corner surrounded by plants where birds and butterflies can also enjoy it.

When it comes to creating a similar calm and peaceful environment, both design teams suggest editing yourself. The team at Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects admits there is a tendency to want to throw everything into residential gardens and encourages you to tap the brakes and find the appropriate materials, plants, and elements that best amplify the unique qualities of your garden space. Alexis Woods echoes this sentiment, noting that the purpose of the Flowers Vineyards design was to immerse the visitor in a garden that evokes the Sonoma county landscape by surrounding them with the same localized plants and materials. They suggest keeping your outdoor space simple so that the eye isn’t jumping around to a million different colors and textures so you can enjoy the simplistic perfection of your natural surroundings.

"display_row_3":"yes","display_row_4":"no","display_row_5":"no","display_row_6":"no","display_row_7":"no

","header_row_3":"Beyond the Lawn","number_of_stories_row_3":"2","stories_row_3":

As the saying goes, nothing lasts forever—yes, including your outdoor furniture. The next time you check out your patio furniture, look for obvious signs of wear and tear. According to Patty Hampton, head of design at Refresh Your Space in the Bay Area, it’s important to decide whether your pieces have seen better days or are just a little dirty. “If the furniture framing can be scrubbed, and the dirt comes off, it should be good,” she shares. “It’s time to replace it when there are signs of rust, wood rot, or if there are weak spots.” San Diego-based designer Christina Kelley agrees and says “rust and rot” are the biggest red flags.

Sign #2: Your Woven Wares Have Gone Wild

Look, we know wicker furniture will give your yard a pretty coastal grandmother flair, but Kelley says these pieces aren’t always worth the headache. “Avoid natural wicker outdoors,” she says. “It can’t handle the elements.” Chances are, natural wicker will show damage quickly so Kelley recommends replacing the real deal with an alternative made from weather-resistant, high-density polyethylene (or HDPE) resin wicker. The team started with an intentional color palette and identified which plants would provide the base green tones. From there, an intentional layering of more washed-out gray-green tones, a sprinkling of “optimistic limey green,” and deeper evergreens not only created a thick foliage layer for privacy, but also muted out the surrounding city hum. The final plant selection was 75% evergreen with the remaining 25% deciduous plants with their bloom times spread across the four seasons so that the garden is constantly changing and adapting to the climate. While a Mediterranean plant palette is the center stage for this particular garden, the team at Peruse advises, “It is incumbent upon us to approach each decision with sensitivity to resources.” They prioritized both plants and trees with low-water needs as well as efficient drainage in hardscape treatments, which they tailor to the local ecosystem to provide habitats and pollen sources for the native pollinator populations.

Christopher Lee Foto

The long narrow passageway where the driveway once continued into the backyard was the biggest opportunity for transformation through plantings. Laurel fig (Ficus retusa nitida, F. maicrocarpa) and waxleaf privet (Ligustrum japonicum ‘texanum’) provide the bulk of the outer boundary and privacy height, while Italian Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) was added in a broken repetition to draw the eye vertically and elongate the space. A tapestry of little Ollie (Olea europaea), smokey westringia (Westringia fruticosa ‘smokey’), and sweet lavender (Lavandula heterophylla) were then woven together in curvature to keep the eye moving with agave blue glow (Agave x blue glow) dotted throughout for a pop of color. Peruse proves here that even small areas can handle a large selection of dense plantings, which in turn make the area feel more spacious and inviting, especially when intentional color and leaf texture are layered correctly.

Redefining Rooms

Christopher Lee Foto

When it comes to creating exceptional outdoor rooms, Peruse encourages one to be meticulous with sun pattern studies and observe where light is abundant during those hours. The team integrated dappled light by softening the open steel frame trellis with plantings of passionfruit (Passiflora edulis) and honeysuckle (lonicera semperviren).

Christopher Lee Foto

Mintee Kalra recommends using treasured objects as a touchpoint for outdoor living rooms and design direction. Here, an antique Provencal farmhouse dining table acted as inspiration—an old-world patina wood story is woven throughout the space. Reclaimed white oak in varying widths of wide plank was used in the outdoor kitchen and storage areas. Unexpected design details such as mitered-edge finger pulls, antique wooden mortars from India, and a reclaimed Chinese bench from an 18th-century barn fill the outdoor area. This mixture of rustic wood keeps the design from feeling too precious while weaving in additional organic textures into the entertaining spaces.

Cohesiveness Through Containers

Christopher Lee Foto

To top off the design, the use of multiple planters in various sizes is a creative way to continue the design narrative throughout the garden. Unfortunately, a sophisticated landscape that seamlessly becomes one with the surroundings is not the first thing that comes to mind. Trust me, as a mom with a 4-year-old I know the struggle is real, but Sara Brunelle and Katie Smith of Lu — La Studio are changing the way we think about these play spaces. In fact, it’s their main design focus with their studio name being short for Ludic Landscape ("ludic" meaning play).

In their debut West Coast project, Sara and Katie were tasked with creating a backyard space in Santa Monica for two young girls to run, climb, hide, and explore. Together they created layers of plants and climbable structures that pull together an organic play experience that is as fabulous as it is functional. A slide, climber, scramble, and discovery path are all part of the mix along with a rich, wild garden. By using choice plantings to knit the space together, it elegantly holds a multifaceted outdoor space that everyone in the family can enjoy. Every element in this space is an invitation to interact no matter your age.

Looking to add a bit of interactive enjoyment to your outdoor space? No kids necessary, because these tips below are perfect for pet parents and grown people alike. Here’s to adding a little curiosity and moving our bodies more when we step outside our doors.

There are different areas for play in the backyard.

Caitlin Atkinson

1. Create Separate Spaces

Lu — La Studio believes play should be integrated into the landscape and that plants are the perfect tool to build those outdoor rooms. Think of a low pruned hedge as an entrance leading into a secret space behind a larger shrub with masses of soft textural grasses used as a boundary. When taking height, texture, and color into consideration, plant-defined spaces can feel flowy and less confined.

When it comes to implementing the interactive components, Sara and Katie advise that “play pockets could include a small nook that is used as a ‘house,’ an area with logs or boulders for balance and climbing, and a small stage for dramatic play.” Additionally, these playful pockets should be connected by a circuit of paths that offer children choice on how to explore a space. When it comes to materials, the team tends to use clusters of plants intermingled with logs as a way to transition into different zones or whenever ground materials change.

The backyard's slope blends in seamlessly with the plants and boulders.

Caitlin Atkinson

2. Use Slopes to Your Advantage

Don’t think of elevation changes as a challenge. Slopes and topography of any kind can not only add visual interest, but they are also an opportunity for play. For this particular project, a wide center slope was restructured, making it an integrated element with a seamless flow from the upper and lower lawn. Here are Lu — La Studio’s tips for tackling (and creating) plant and play filled inclines in any backyard:

Make it a hillslide

It doesn't have to be high! It can be as low as 3 feet. But it does have to be steep. A slide is set at a 50-degree slope so you will likely have to make your hill steeper to accommodate it. Holding a 50-degree slope is tricky and this is where boulders come in, which not only hold the slope in place but create challenging steps that make for a good climb.

Boulders and logs become places to climb.

Caitlin Atkinson

Add pathways

Depending on the steepness of your site you may need to gently orient the path in a switchback parallel to the hill to make sure you don't scour the slope. Use stepable plants, such as thyme or sedges, that can take light foot traffic. Allow large soft textural grasses to create the boundaries of the pathway.

Planting on a slope

Planting can help retain the grade and prevent erosion. We like to use a matrix of grasses and groundcovers. Depending on the steepness, hedges and evergreens can be used at the steepest points to hold the slope and define no-go zones.

Prep

The angle of your slope can be pushed and pulled to be steeper or more gentle. Once you settle on a grade, prep your soil and install any necessary drains. While planting will hold the grades in place, adding boulders or retaining walls can also hold steep spaces. Keep height in mind when adding these structural elements so they might also be functional as resting places to sit.

There are many pockets of plants to explore in the garden.

Caitlin Atkinson

3. Perfect the Plant Palette

When choosing plants for play it is important to think about how they can both create space and bring in character. The duo encourages you to think less about how plants can decorate and more how they can be experienced. And they add that they “love a secret garden, a place that feels a little overgrown with clearings of hidden spaces to explore. These spaces are both beautiful and evocative and speak to the playful spirit of both children and adults.”

For Sara and Katie, it's not always about specific plants, it's about how you use them to create mystery and secrets within the garden. They suggest starting with “a grass or sedge and then seed in some plants of interest. For scents and softness, think native salvias, herby perennials, and flowering shrubs.” They also note succulents, which are great for adding structure, but just make sure to choose an agave that doesn’t have teeth to keep the playing field poke-free.

A few choice plants for consideration:

Sesleria autumnalis

Salvia apiana, Salvia mellifera

Stachys byzantina

Eriogonum fasciculatum, Monardella villosa

Agave attenuata, Calliandra californica, Diplacus puniceus

Plenty of opportunities for climbing and exploring in the space.

Caitlin Atkinson

4. Size Doesn’t Matter

Thinking you need an expansive plot to pull this off? Not the case! The duo encourages you to try implementing playful points no matter the backyard. “The scale of the spaces that children feel comfortable in are different from those of adults," they say. "Scale it down, bring it in. Offer children tight spaces that make them feel held and that are clearly just for them.”

Sara and Katie add, “a good interactive play garden inspires exploration and builds on extent by offering destinations. A crop of boulders or a scramble of laying logs arranged together can be a great element for climbing, balancing, and hiding/seeking. Changing out and adding elements through the seasons will add intrigue and renew the sense of exploration.”

How to Design a Kid-Friendly Garden That's
